phpGroupWare is a network based groupware suite, base and tool to research, study, develop, produce, organize... You can describe it as a suite of specialized applications.
The goal of the project is to develop an operating system- and place independent working environment, based on the application programming interface [API] of phpGroupWare. The structure has been designed for ease of development new tools for the project, all basic functions are included in the API. The focus to code new applications is to develop their special functions.
phpGroupWare is written in PHP. The content [ application data | translations of the user interface ] is stored in a database [ MySQL | PostgrSQL | Oracle | Sybase | MSQL | MSSQL ]. User authentification can be done via SQL | SQL_SSL | LDAP | Mail | HTTP | NIS | PAM. The look of the graphically user interfaces is described in seperatly files [Templates]. This way development is done seperated from PHP code. phpGroupWare supports 3 Template types to describe a layout [ XML | eTemplates | HTML ]. Definitions of font | color | positioning is done via CSS.
The project is open for new developers and contributions. If you are not familiar with PHP and SQL you can contribute by creating and maintaining layouts | documentations.
The modular structure makes it possible to setup a flexible working environment, adapt the system on special demands. phpGroupWare includes a setup tool to install or remove applications. To get started coding new applications, there are several developer tools available.
To use phpGroupWare just point your browser to the URL where the groupware server runs. This makes it possible to use it from wherever you are. You only need a box with network connection and an installed browser. All data are stored in a database on the server.
Everyone who wants to work with the groupware suite has to have a login name and a password. Only authorized users have access to the working environment. You can grant access to other users to see or modify your own data, so it is possible for groups of people to work together on the same stuff. phpGroupWare is an Open Source project and written in PHP. In december 2001 it became a GNU package as well. The source code is managed via CVS at Savannah. phpGroupWare is licensed under the GNU General Public License [GPL], which means it is free to study, distribute, modify and use..
